There might not be conclusive proof that microwaves cause cancer, but there is enough opinion out there to make me very worried — and I for one am not taking chances.
By Catherine Mann
I don’t own a microwave and would never use one, because I believe it is unhealthy, unnatural and might indeed cause cancer.
Yes, the evidence is slim and perhaps not verified in any valuable scientific journal. But there are enough scientific arguments out there to make me very frightened indeed.
My handsome and highly intelligent nephew (fact, not opinion!) recently queried his mum’s decision to listen to me and toss the microwave. But he wouldn’t accept a simple fob-off; he wanted statistics, facts, details, hard proof!
Enter health-obsessed aunt, alias me!
So, for my nephew, and for my mum — who loves her microwave and has produced many Sunday lunch chickens out of this “too-good-to-be-true” contraption — and others who don’t wish to be bogged down with the intricacies of Russian, Swiss and German studies, I’ve gathered the basics.
Dr. Hans Hertel, food scientist and author of “Search For Health”, researched the implications of microwaving for a food company, and he produced alarming information. However, it is alleged that his findings didn’t suit the “Authorities” as the success of microwaves possibly benefitted too many people (ie the hip pocket was looking too good). He was gagged in 1992, but he fought back and a new court ruling in 1998 lifted the gagging order and the article was published.
Microwaves are very short waves heating food items by frantically agitating food molecules. However, Dr Hertel argues that the agitation is so great that the cells and molecules are apparently deformed, ruptured and altered. His research found that the very science of the food radically changes. Your tummy does not recognize this foreign substance. The result? Poor digestion, stomach cramps for starters. But ultimately, you could end up with a severely jeopardised immune system.
Dr Hertel said that free radicals proliferate and this depresses the immune system, inviting disease to take up residence in your body. The list of ailments he and other researchers allege to have discovered which are associated with the consumption of microwaved food include: eye pain, cataracts, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, dizziness … twenty-eight all up. The count also includes the big one – cancer.
I know: everything these days is purported to cause cancer! But when the information suggested my blood is also being altered by the ingestion of radioactive material, I was disgusted and paid a bit more attention.
Microwaving meats, grains, milk and even thawing vegetables and fruit has been found by researchers to convert the food into carcinogenic matter. Long-term consumption of microwaved food causes an increase in cancerous cells in our blood.
Furthermore, irregular blood profiles similar to early stage cancer have been found in microwave users. Cholesterol levels shoot up (the bad variety), oxygen-carrying haemoglobin and disease-fighting lymphocytes decrease in level. Not good.
The bad rap continues.
Anthony Wayne and Lawrence Newell, from world renowned Christian Law Institute and Fellowship Assembly, said that there are many reasons to stick to conventional cooking:
Wayne and Newell said that regularly eating microwaved food causes long-term or permanent brain damage, memory loss, impaired concentration, emotional see-sawing, and a decreased IQ. Male and female hormone production becomes imbalanced. Furthermore, the effects of microwaved food by-products lasts in the body either in the long term, or permanently, apparently because the body absorbs altered compounds or ‘radiolytes’ that cannot be destroyed. Nutrients and vitamins of microwaved food is either reduced or changed, rendering virtually no nourishment for the body.
Paul Pitchford in his book “Healing with Wholefoods” talks about the traditional Chinese concept of ‘qi.’ This relates to the vitality of someone or something. The ‘qi’ permeating the food is transferred into you. Microwave cooking however destroys this life force. It denatures and ‘toxifies’ the food. Diminished ‘qi’ has serious consequences for the health of your mind, body and spirit.
Researching the pros and cons of microwaving is, of course, very confusing due to the conflicting arguments. For example, Renee Depres offers a very different take on microwaves. Depres was so convincing she almost had me rushing back to the OP shop to retrieve the two I had already disposed of. Almost. Click here to find out more.
It’s the usual “up to you” scenario. Read widely and open-mindedly. Consider your lifestyle, and value system. Personally, the fact that there is even an argument about it is enough to sway me. I will be old fashioned, take the time and prepare my food conventionally and “inconveniently”. Just in case.
